Jenna Lyons

It's all about the texture, texture, texture!

I’m starting a new feature here in SOS called Fantastic Fashionista, born out of my love for scouring the WorldWideWeb for fashion inspiration, both for work and play. I started it a few months back on Stylist of Sorts’ Instagram and Facebook accounts, after meeting my client Clarisse who introduced me to a certain Natasha Goldenberg. Her style was such a feast for the eyes that I HAD to gather photos and made it into a collage (really for my own consumption) but also to serve as aspiration for fashionistas everywhere. Some get excited over cars, jewelry, the latest gadget. I adore looking at über stylish people and imagine a world filled with the fabulously-dressed, day in and day out. It may sound shallow to some, but it feeds my soul like no other and makes me happy. Being a visual person, beautiful people inspire me in a way painters do with a muse. I’m no painter or great artist, but as a stylist, a good photograph with a well-dressed person is everything. More on Natasha in another post, first let’s focus on the Queen: Jenna Lyons, Creative Director for J. Crew.

My obsession with Jenna started years ago when J. Crew did a 180 and relaunched as a fashion force to be reckoned with after years of the same sleepy preppy aesthetic. All of a sudden the brand was the talk of the town, giving their preppy roots a twist by way of quirky, sometimes messy styling, genius mix of fabric and texture. Not everything matched in their look book yet somehow it worked, they were one of the early purveyors of the sneakers and dress combo, bedhead hair and bling with a casual t-shirt. It was love at first sight for my sister and I who had–and still have–a little friendly competition on who can come up with a more “Jenna” look. I have to admit that she gets it more often than I do, maybe because she’s got the whole tomboy chic down pat. Cricket was also an early fan of sneakers with dressy stuff. Way ahead of the curve if I may say so myself.

Jenna has a uniform, like all chic women do, as I came to realise even more after starting my personal styling business. Although I have yet to pin down my own, I am slowly finding my way through shapeless dresses and stripes worn with everything. Jenna’s aesthetic is seen everywhere in the brand, from the styling, to the lip color, prints and hairstyle. What she wears you can probably find in your closet, but the magic lies on HOW she wears it, which to me is so much more challenging than putting on one designer head to toe. Her inventiveness is not lost, she is true to who she is, knows her body structure like no other and is not at all apologetic about her life choices. No wonder Kate Middleton totally lost all composure upon meeting her. Sorry, Beyoncè (who was reportedly just granted a polite smile).

I’ll let the photos do the talking. #FantasticFashionistaJenna
