At 19 years of age, Tavi Gevinson is a fashion industry veteran. I was an avid reader and follower of her now-defunct blog, The Style Rookie back when she was a pre-teen and still somewhat under the radar living at her parent’s house in suburbian Illinois. I was in awe of her writing style and even more so with her fashion sense: she could wear the craziest outfits and made it look normal. Well, perhaps normal to fashion fiends at least. She had none of the cocky, know-it-all tone of a kid on the rise. Her outfit posts were studied, thought-provoking and raw. So raw that it made a grown-up like me appreciate her innovativeness and genuine delight upon receiving designer stuff on loan for her to shoot and post. She was never jaded, nor had that egocentric air that’s definitive of some millenials today. I believe it’s this attitude that catapulted her to international stardom as an author, fashion fixture, feminist and actress. Her personal style has grown up with her too. From outlandish layering and statement hats she has graduated to a cleaner, more streamlined aesthetic clearly on her way to evolving into a self-assured, confident woman—fashion and career-wise. Although I miss her kooky ensembles as much as the next person, I am loving the woman she is becoming and cannot wait to see how she rules the world, one creative enterprise at a time. Here are some of her most memorable looks.
