Okay so I’m probably seasons behind in embracing the Birkenstocks comeback since it exploded in the summer of 2014. Maybe it’s because I am a kid of the 90’s, the time when it first came into the scene worn as it was meant to be: utilitarian, dressed down, rugged and sometimes–gasp–with socks! I remember going to the then newly-opened Enchanted Kingdom in a white t-shirt, grey jeans and my sister’s black pair with white socks. My friend Rina, ever the blunt one, asked me point blank, “what’s up with the socks?!” with matching making fun face. I could only muster a sheepish smile. I’ve conveniently erased that memory and went on with life without them.
Little did I know that more than 10 years later, the ubiquitous sandals would make a strong comeback, along with 90’s minimalist looks renamed normcore for the millenials to embrace and make their own. And that they did by wearing it with dressy, cocktail dresses, mid-length skirts, monochromatic looks, even corporate attire. As absurd as it would’ve been to my then 20-year old self, the 39-year old me actually thinks it looks fresh and modern styled this way. I recently chanced upon a pair from Florsheim kids that only cost a fraction of the price of the original Birks (which I refused to buy again) and decided to embrace the trend the second time around.
I’ve been scouring the net for outfit ideas and sharing it here with everyone who’s on the shelf about getting a pair and fearing that wearing them with socks or to the gym is the only way to go. It’s a fun and challenging process for me and I invite you to do the same. Share it with me and I’ll post the most innovative ones!
